COMMUNITY OUTREACH - Helping Families Care for their Pets

Please contact Alicia at alicia@poidogsandpopoki.org if your volunteer group is interested in hosting an outreach event for your community.  Door to door activities include disseminating pet goody bags and educating owners about tools and resources to care for their pets, including availabiltiy of affordable spay and neuter services through PDP.

"Unchain Your Heart. Unchain Your Dog."

This special Valentine's Day message encourages homeowners to unchain their dogs.  PDP volunteers canvassed almost 200 homes in a Hawaiian homestead community - visiting homeowners door to door:
  • Disseminating Petco "love your pet" goody bags along a door hanger educating petowners about the impact of chaining a dog for life.
  • Educating petowners about PDP and how they can help improve the lives of their dogs - especially those that are chained.
  • Providing a quick health check for dogs including microchip identification, nail clipping, flea and tick medication, and ear cleaning, while encouraging sterilization to reduce the cycle of pet overpopulation.
PDP believes that all dogs deserve better than a life at the end of a chain, but their owners need our help.  Volunteers encouraged owners to complete a nomination form online to receive support from PDP - either from a new fence, kennel, or even spay/neuter surgery.  PDP does not judge pet owners but acknowledge that caring for a pet is expensive - especially during these tough economic times.  PDP was founded to help people in Hawaii care for their pets as well as improve the quality of lives of dogs and cats living outdoors. And it's important for us to support pet owners that need the most help.

Due to the overwhelming success of the project, PDP will be continuing  similar outreach efforts to communities across the island.

Volunteers Always Needed

The more volunteers we have to canvass the community, the greater our outreach.  Volunteers will receive a special PDP "Unchain Your Heart. Unchain Your Dog" t-shirt.

Volunteers should be comfortable speaking with pet owners.  Veterinary Technicians are very important to this effort - to not only assist with health checks but to communicate the importance of providing ongoing health care for pets.  But any experience around dogs is valuable.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer for the next "Unchain your heart. Unchain your dog" event, please contact Michelle via email at michelle@poidogsandpopoki.org.

PDP subsequently canvassed Waimanalo Hawaiian Homestead:  17 dogs received microchips, 7 will receive sterilization surgery, 11 cats were already sterilized, and 3 kittens offered for adoption by a pet owner.  Her cats have since been sterilized and microchipped. More than 80 pet owners received a Petco goody bag and free wet dog food.
